Oldboy, a Corridor of Fifteen Years
Oldboy, a corridor of fifteen years
Park Chan-wook's 2003 <Oldboy> won the Grand Prix at Cannes. A new benchmark for Korean cinema's mise-en-scène and violent aesthetics — set inside a five-minute hallway shot.
Released after fifteen years, Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) meets the narrow alleys of Seoul's Yongsan, the Han River banks, and the corner store in Huam-dong. The art team painted the tone of 'a strange everyday' onto every scene.
The famous hallway fight was filmed at an abandoned building in Chungjeongno — a single 17-minute take across 17 attempts. A historical landmark of wide-shot one-takes in Korean cinema.
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone. — Oh Dae-su
