BTS: The Return, Every Moment of the Reunion

Released globally on Netflix on March 27, 2026, BTS: The Return is a documentary film that follows the seven members of BTS as they reunite in Los Angeles after completing approximately three years and nine months of mandatory military service, to create their fifth studio album ARIRANG.

Directed by Vietnamese-American filmmaker Bao Nguyen, the documentary intimately captures the roughly two-month period the members spent living together in a Beverly Hills mansion, writing and recording music, before returning to Seoul to prepare for their historic comeback. Within its first week on Netflix, the film reached No. 3 on the Global Non-English Film chart with 3.3 million views, transcending the typical K-pop documentary audience.

What sets The Return apart from previous BTS documentaries is its remarkably intimate tone. Rather than a polished promotional piece, Bao Nguyen captures the vulnerability of seven men in their late twenties and early thirties trying to find their creative chemistry again after years apart. As Salon described it, the film is "a poignant snapshot of a troubled comeback," acknowledging the pressure and uncertainty alongside the joy of reunion.

Behind the Scenes

The documentary's production is split between two major chapters: LA and Seoul.

The LA Chapter (approximately 2 months): In the summer of 2025, immediately following the final member's military discharge, all seven members gathered at a gated Beverly Hills estate valued at approximately $17.5 million. The property featured a pool, a separate guest house, and a media room. The members commuted daily to recording studios while living together, recreating the communal dynamic of their pre-fame trainee days.

Director Bao Nguyen told Variety that his goal was "capturing moments when they forgot the camera existed." The documentary succeeds at this, with scenes of members playing in the pool, having late-night conversations in the living room, and cooking meals together. V's Instagram post of the pool area inadvertently revealed the mansion's location to fans, becoming a viral moment even before the documentary's release.

Santa Monica Beach appears as the members' escape between recording sessions. The sunset sequence of all seven walking side by side along the shoreline became the documentary's most iconic image, widely shared across social media and used in Netflix's promotional materials.

The Seoul Chapter: After completing their LA sessions, the members returned to HYBE's Yongsan headquarters in Seoul. The documentary follows them through the final stages of album production in practice rooms and recording booths, choreography rehearsals, and preparations for their comeback performance. The film builds to its emotional climax as the members prepare for the Gwanghwamun Square comeback live, connecting directly to their historic March 21 performance. The Gwanghwamun live performance itself is covered in detail in our separate BTS Comeback Live: ARIRANG content.

Travel Guide to Filming Locations

LA Route (Full Day): Beverly Hills drive → Santa Monica Beach → Santa Monica Pier

  • Beverly Hills Mansion: The estate is private property, but you can experience the neighborhood atmosphere via a Beverly Hills celebrity homes driving tour (multiple operators, $40-60 USD). About 30 minutes from LAX by car. Uber/Lyft recommended.
  • Santa Monica Beach: About 20 minutes from Beverly Hills by car, or take the Metro Expo Line to Santa Monica station and walk 15 minutes. Visit at sunset (6-7 PM) for the closest match to the documentary's iconic walking scene. The Santa Monica Pier, with its Ferris wheel and beach boardwalk, is free to access.
  • Best Time to Visit: LA is pleasant year-round. Summer (June-August) matches the documentary's filming period. Santa Monica Beach is least crowded Tuesday-Friday mornings.

Seoul Route (Half Day): HYBE Yongsan HQ → Gwanghwamun Square → Gyeongbokgung Palace

  • HYBE Yongsan HQ: 5-minute walk from Yongsan Station Exit 4 (Line 1). The building interior is not open to the public, but the ground-floor HYBE INSIGHT exhibition (22,000 KRW admission, ~$16) offers BTS history and archives. Book in advance, as it sells out weeks ahead since the documentary's release.
  • Gwanghwamun Square: Exit 2, Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5). Open 24 hours, free. The square with Gwanghwamun Gate and Bukaksan mountain as backdrop is the ultimate ARMY photo spot. Night illumination is especially beautiful (sunset to 10 PM).
  • Gyeongbokgung Palace: 3-minute walk from Gwanghwamun Square. Admission 3,000 KRW (~$2), free with hanbok rental. Experience the palace atmosphere the members visited in the documentary.

Fan Pilgrimage

The documentary's Netflix release triggered an immediate global ARMY pilgrimage wave. Hashtags #BTSTheReturn, #BTSLAHouse, and #더리턴촬영지 trended worldwide within hours of release. The Beverly Hills mansion's location was identified by fans through V's Instagram post, leading to a surge of visitors photographing the property from the public road. (Please respect the private property and photograph only from public areas.)

Santa Monica Beach has become the essential ARMY pilgrimage stop in Los Angeles. Recreating the "seven walking side by side at sunset" scene has gone viral, with groups of seven friends posting their version under #BTSSantaMonica. Tour operators in LA have added "BTS: The Return" beach walks to their K-pop pilgrimage packages.

In Seoul, HYBE headquarters was already the top ARMY pilgrimage destination, but post-documentary visits surged dramatically. HYBE INSIGHT exhibition reservations sold out for over two weeks immediately after release. Gwanghwamun Square benefits from the documentary-to-live-performance dual pilgrimage, with ARMY visiting first for "The Return" behind-the-scenes vibes, then for the comeback live stage recreation.

The documentary also sparked cross-continental pilgrimage packages, with travel agencies offering "LA + Seoul BTS: The Return" combined tour packages covering both filming locations in a single trip.
